Most solid tumors are acidic due to the high metabolism and poor circulation. Acidity of the liquid space between tumor cells increases cell migration and metastasis. Neutralizing the acid pH of tumors with baking soda (NaHCO3 or sodium bicarbonate*) has been shown to reduce metastases. Baking soda works as a buffer**, but has too much sodium. The current study was done to see if a non-bicarbonate buffer, IEPA (2-imidazole-1-yl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-propionic acid), would also reduce metastases.
This study focused on prostate cancer since previous studies have shown it to be sensitive to bicarbonate treatment. Just as previous studies revealed that bicarbonate reduces metastases, this study indicates that the same is true for non-bicarbonate buffers. The effect is not due to some non-buffering action of bicarbonates, but is shared with some non-carbonated buffers. IEPA raised the pH of the primary tumor to a slight degree, especially in large, rapidly metabolizing tumors.
Prostate cancers can be sensitive to both sodium bicarbonate and non-bicarbonate buffers in animal studies. Both reduced the number of metastases in prostate cancer and no negative effects to IEHP were seen. Buffers other than bicarbonates are effective for reducing metastases.
CONCLUSION: Specifically, this study demonstrated that non-volatile buffers can reduce tumor metastases by their buffering action and not by the presence of bicarbonate.
