International studies have revealed a great deal of information on the importance of food intake to healthy aging. In this study, elderly Greeks were studied in Australia and in Sparta, Greece. The subjects were studied for quality of life and for survival.
The important nutritional variables which were associated with a high quality of life in old age and a long life included a large variety of plant foods, including vegetables, legumes and fruits, a high intake and variety of sea foods and a low intake of meat.
CONCLUSION: A study comparing elderly Greek diets in Greece and the diets of Greeks in Greece showed that quality of life and longevity were related to a high intake of plant foods, high intake of sea foods and a low intake of meat.
